ABSTRACT

Objectives: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio [NLR] in patients with metastatic testicular cancer [tCa]

Design: Retrospective view of prospective recorded data

Setting: Clinical study was conducted at multicentre between May 2010 and September 2016

Subjects: Patients with tCa who underwent radical orchiectomy were enrolled. Similar surgical methods, laboratory analyses, and radiologic examinations were performed and all patients were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 [n = 108] consisted of patients with non-metastatic testicular cancer; Group 2 [n = 38] consisted of patients with metastatic [solid organ-lymph node metastasis] tCa

Intervention: Radical orchiectomy, blood sample

Main outcome measures: Demographic, preoperative, and postoperative data were noted. Postoperative complications were interpreted according to modified Clavien classifications. Statistical significant p was p

Results: Mean follow-up was 36.4 [4 - 72] months. Mean age was 39 years [19 - 71 years]. There were significant differences between groups in preoperative NLR, tCa markers and diameter of tumour [p = 0.03, p <0.001, p = 0.01, respectively]. Besides, invasion to lymphovascular, rete testis, cord, epididymis, and surgical margin positivity, postoperative tCa markers were significantly higher in group 2 than group 1. Area under ROC curve was 0.69, [p <0.001] and cut-off value for NLR was 3.11 in terms of any metastasis. There was no serious complication after operation. Five patients experienced wound infections [Clavien 1]

Conclusions: Preoperative NLR could help us to predict lymph node and solid organ metastasis in patients with tCa. If the NLR is over 3.1, clinicians should be aware of metastasis

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The mean platelet volume (MPV) is a marker of the platelet activity and is reported to increase in vascular diseases. We aimed to investigate the association between MPV and vasculogenic erectile dysfunction (ED). MATERIALS AND METHODS: MPV and platelet (PLT) levels were measured in 50 cases of ED and 40 healthy controls. The diagnosis of vasculogenic ED was based on a detailed sexual history, physical examination, laboratory assessment, and color Doppler ultrasonography. The results are given as mean+/-standard deviation of the mean. RESULTS: The mean ages of the patient and the control groups were 53.70+/-12.39 years (range 24~77 years) and 53.85+/-9.5 years (range 30~73 years), respectively (p=0.947). The MPV and PLT values were significantly higher in the patients with ED than those of the controls (7.49+/-1.4), (6.85+/-1.2), (262.97+/-68), (252.89+/-82) respectively, p0.05), and there was no correlation between MPV and either age of patients (p=0.905) or duration of ED (p=0.583). CONCLUSIONS: The platelet count and MPV was detected to be increased in patients with vasculogenic ED. This finding suggests a role for platelets in the pathogenesis of vascular complications and that the MPV would be useful in monitoring disease progression.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study, to investigate whether there is any association between enuresis in childhood and nocturnal polyuria syndrome (NPS) in adult life. METHODS: The study consisted of thirty five patients with nocturnal polyuria, and thirty five healthy people without nocturnal polyuria in adult life, were asked to assess their enuresis in childhood. RESULTS: There was a history of enuresis in childhood in 18 (51.42%) of 35 of men with nocturnal polyuria and in 4 (11.42%) of 35 without nocturnal polyuria. Enuresis in childhood was significantly more common in men with nocturnal polyuria than without nocturnal polyuria. The difference was significant (P<0.0001). The prevalence of enuresis in the nocturnal polyuria (51.42%) was more than two-fold higher than reported prevalence in general populations. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the history of enuresis in childhood seems to increase the risk of having NPS in adult life. This relationship should be taken into account in the evaluation of men with complaints from NPS in adult life and the possible common pathophysiology should be considered in the treatment planning.

ABSTRACT

Retroperitoneal fibrosis was first described in 1905 by Albarran, a French urologist, who performed ureterolysis for ureteral compression produced by the disease. However, this disease became an established clinical entity by Ormond's account in the English literature in 1948. Pericystitis plastica has been used the define an extremely rare type of Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) constricting the bladder. In this study, we discussed the recovery of 29-year-old woman with pericystitis plastica who was misdiagnosed as pelvic malignancy or a chronic/subacut pelvic inflammation at the first evaluation.
